Jim Burns, Behavior Change and Life Coach

Most people have something they want to change. They want to become more active, develop healthier habits, manage their time, or move forward with a personal goal they have put off for years. Often, the difficulty is turning that desire into a plan they can follow—and continuing when life gets in the way. As a behavior change and life coach, I help people bridge that gap. My name is Jim Burns, founder of Be Simply Fit. My work combines my background in education with my experience as a NASM Certified Personal Trainer, Senior Fitness Specialist, Corrective Exercise Specialist, and Behavior Change Specialist. I help people identify what matters to them, establish realistic goals, and take responsibility for the actions that move them forward.

A Goal Needs a Personal Reason

Before we develop a plan, we explore why the goal matters. “I want to exercise more” may really mean, “I want to remain independent.” “I want to organize my time” may mean, “I want to make room for the people and activities I care about.” Understanding that personal reason gives the goal meaning. I listen, ask questions, and help clients clarify what they want for themselves. The goal belongs to the client. My role is to help bring it into focus and make it actionable.

Turning Goals Into Clear Objectives

A meaningful goal needs specific steps. Together, we break a larger ambition into manageable objectives: actions that can be scheduled, practiced, and reviewed. For someone who wants to become more active, the first objective might be completing a short, appropriate exercise session three days a week. For someone working on a personal project, it might be setting aside twenty minutes on designated mornings. We define what the person will do, when they will do it, and how we will recognize progress. This approach creates a clear next step. It also helps us see whether the plan fits the person’s current abilities, responsibilities, and circumstances.

Addressing What Gets in the Way

People bring more than goals to coaching. They bring habits, doubts, competing demands, and experiences that can affect their willingness to begin or continue. I help clients identify those obstacles and develop practical responses. If a schedule is too crowded, we look for a smaller commitment that fits. If the plan feels overwhelming, we simplify the first step. If a missed day becomes a reason to quit, we work on returning to the next planned action. My years working with students with learning disabilities and behavioral challenges taught me the importance of listening, patience, clear expectations, and adapting support to the individual. I bring those same principles to coaching.

Accountability With Support and Honest Conversation

Accountability is a central part of my work. I help clients follow through on the objectives they have chosen by reviewing commitments, discussing results, and identifying the next action. Our conversations address straightforward questions: What did you agree to do? What happened? What helped? What needs to change? I recognize effort and progress, and I am willing to have an honest conversation when actions are drifting away from goals. A missed commitment gives us information we can use to improve the plan. The client remains responsible for taking action; I provide structure, encouragement, and consistent follow-up.

Building Confidence Through Action

My aim is to help people develop greater confidence in their ability to direct their own lives. That confidence grows as they practice making commitments, following through, and recovering from setbacks. Through Be Simply Fit, I offer coaching that connects personal goals with everyday behavior. Whether your focus is fitness, a more consistent routine, or another meaningful life objective, we can work together to clarify your direction and build a practical path forward. You bring the goal and the willingness to act. I bring guidance, support, and accountability to help you keep moving.
